Every year, there are hundreds of events held around the world celebrating fashion and its figures. From Fashion Weeks to award ceremonies, annual fashion events see fashion fanatics, celebrities and designers gather in their thousands to watch the latest catwalk shows or honour the latest and greatest talent in the sector. Here are just five of the biggest events in the fashion calendar.
London Fashion Week
Held twice a year, London Fashion Week (LFW) is one of the ‘Big Four’ Fashion Weeks (along with Paris, New York and Milan). The first LFW was organised by the British Fashion Council back in 1983. As one of the biggest trade events, LFW attracts significant attention from the press, and is attended by some of the biggest names in fashion. Currently, the majority of ‘on-schedule’ events throughout the week are held at Somerset House.
The Fashion Awards
Formerly known as the British Fashion Awards, the Fashion Awards has been one of Britain’s biggest fashion spectacles since 1989, celebrating those who have made the biggest contribution to British fashion each year. Attended by designers, models, style icons and famous faces from home and abroad, award categories include Womenswear Designer of the Year, International Model and Outstanding Achievement in Fashion. Last year’s winners included Ralph Lauren and the late Franca Sozzani.
Also known as the Met Ball or the Costume Institute Gala, the Met Gala is an annual fundraising event held for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute in New York. Each year, the event has a different theme and all guests must dress to fit it; previous themes have included superheroes, technology and furniture in the 18th Century. Anna Wintour oversees the guest list with the help of Vogue staff members.
The Vogue Festival
Held annually, the two-day Vogue Festival offers people the opportunity to see and hear from leading figures in the fashion industry, including designers, models, photographers and writers. Previous speakers have included Victoria Beckham, Mario Testino and Tom Ford. Aside from talks, there are workshops, masterclasses and makeovers for all to get involved in.
Cannes Film Festival
Although the focus of the Cannes Film Festival clearly isn’t fashion, it is an event that has grown synonymous with fashion over the years. Founded in 1946, the film festival has been celebrating films of all genres from around the world, but most of the glossies these days are far more interested in who has the best red carpet look. The biggest hits from last year included Jourdan Dunn and Mischa Barton.
